The Physical Therapy Supervisor plays a crucial role in overseeing staff therapists, therapy assistants, and support personnel. As part of an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team, the Supervisor is responsible for conducting physical therapy evaluations, developing treatment plans, implementing therapies, documenting progress, and educating patients and their families.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing orientation and on-the-job training for staff.
- Developing, monitoring, and adjusting therapy programs.
- Participating in departmental and facility initiatives.
- Upholding ethical standards and regulatory compliance in practice.
The Supervisor collects and documents patient care data in accordance with established guidelines and regulatory requirements, ensuring an understanding of reimbursement systems and their implications for patient care. This includes:
- Conducting examinations and evaluations.
- Maintaining daily notes and progress reports.
- Creating discharge plans and facilitating communication within the team.
Additionally, the Supervisor prepares for evaluations by gathering patient histories, demonstrating knowledge of diagnoses, and selecting appropriate tests and measures. They synthesize evaluation results to establish diagnoses, goals, prognoses, and comprehensive care plans.
Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and their support systems is essential. The Supervisor continually assesses and modifies care plans as needed, initiates discharge planning, and provides education to patients and their families.
To ensure clinical staff competence, the Supervisor offers orientation and ongoing supervision, documenting performance through evaluations and necessary reports. They develop individual and departmental education plans based on observations and changes in practice.
Furthermore, the Supervisor prioritizes patient needs, manages scheduling, and ensures the cost-effective use of supplies and equipment. They evaluate the necessity for new resources and make recommendations for procurement while participating in performance improvement initiatives and program development.
Functional TrainingThis may encompass gait training, therapeutic activities, community reintegration, and work injury management.
Musculoskeletal Interventions
This may include therapeutic exercises and manual therapy techniques.
Neurological Interventions
This may involve handling techniques, neuro-developmental training, and cognitive rehabilitation.
Other Duties
This may include airway clearance techniques and cardiac rehabilitation monitoring.
All other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Graduation from an APTA accredited Physical Therapy program or equivalent is required. A demonstrated interest and ability in supervision and management is essential.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A minimum of three years of clinical experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications Required
A valid Physical Therapist License is mandatory.
