Job Summary

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Protection Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our regulatory compliance team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our operations are in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply federal and state statutes and regulations related to coal mining, natural resource management, and abandoned mine land reclamation.
  • Provide technical assistance to states on matters related to permitting and abandoned mine land programs.
  • Analyze and evaluate rules and regulations related to abandoned mine land reclamation and regulatory program administration and enforcement.
  • Conduct oversight inspections and field evaluations to evaluate state programs and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare written reports and recommendations on program effectiveness and compliance.
Requirements
  • One year of specialized experience in interpreting federal and state statutes and regulations related to coal mining, natural resource management, or abandoned mine land reclamation.
  • Experience in analyzing and evaluating rules and regulations related to abandoned mine land reclamation and regulatory program administration and enforcement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with state and tribal regulatory authorities, local governments, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions

The work environment involves typical office-related risks and requires standard safety precautions. The incumbent will regularly visit active and abandoned mine sites and reclamation areas to assess conditions and monitor program implementation. Special safety precautions are necessary due to the presence of explosive or toxic gases at some mines.
