Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Deputy Coroner On-Call to join our team at Montrose County, CO. As a key member of our Coroner's Office, you will be responsible for responding to reportable deaths, conducting thorough investigations, and providing support to families and loved ones.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to the scene of reportable deaths, conducting thorough investigations and gathering information.
  • Obtain medical records, interview witnesses, family members, physicians, and other professionals associated with the deceased.
  • Write accurate and unbiased reports, documenting findings on the Coroner's Office of Medical Investigations investigative form.
  • Ensure positive identification of the decedent and notify the immediate next of kin in a timely and compassionate manner.
  • Interact with family members and friends in a comforting and professional manner.
  • Possess proficient time management skills, ability to work with minimal supervision, and ensure timely response, notification of next of kin, and completion of all required reports and documents.
  • Evaluate observations of the scene, examination of the decedent, and history provided.
  • Interact with federal, state, and local agencies involved in the death investigation.
  • Identify, properly preserve, and document evidence.
  • Keep current on scientific technology and investigative techniques.
  • Attend autopsies, as needed, and quarterly training meetings.
Requirements:
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience in medical field (RN, paramedic, EMT, etc.) or prior/current P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer or equivalent.
  • Certification with the Colorado Coroners Association.
  • Death Investigators Certification (may be obtained after hire).
  • Complete FEMA Incident Command System courses - 100.b and 100.a (may be completed after hire).
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in death investigation.
  • Medical background and/or law enforcement investigative experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of modern methods of death investigations.
  • Knowledge of fingerprinting.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Ability to work with deceased bodies under various conditions.
  • Ability to conduct research, data collection, and analysis.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Frequently required to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to respond to customers' needs and perform tasks requiring extensive hand and eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects ranging from 25 pounds to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to smell to distinguish between normal odors or controlled substances.
  • Physical ability and mobility to drive a motor vehicle to and from field and meetings as required.
  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work extended shifts with rotation and attend training and meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours.
