Role Overview
The Visual Arts Laboratory Specialist is tasked with the setup, operation, and upkeep of the photography lab and arts studio facilities. Responsibilities include mixing chemicals, managing materials and equipment, performing daily cleaning tasks, and overseeing inventory of supplies. This role also involves maintaining and supervising the digital lab, utilizing knowledge of Photoshop and other Adobe software to assist students effectively.

A Typical Day for a Visual Arts Laboratory Specialist Includes:
  • Organizing and maintaining lab resources, ensuring proper disposal of used materials.
  • Collaborating with instructors to ensure lab resources align with the curriculum.
  • Providing expert consultation on lab operational procedures.
  • Receiving and staging materials and equipment for storage.
  • Transporting materials and equipment within the facility.
  • Conducting physical inventories of equipment and materials, including maintaining accounting records.
  • Performing routine maintenance on lab equipment and arranging for repairs as needed.
  • Cleaning darkroom areas and ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Setting up chemicals for lab use and assisting students during their practical sessions.
  • Mixing various photographic chemicals and following established safety guidelines.
  • Completing additional job-related tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • An Associate's degree or equivalent coursework.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience.
Knowledge of:
  • Adobe Photoshop and related software.
  • Microsoft Office Suite or similar applications.
Skills in:
  • Delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Maintaining attention to detail while managing time and tasks effectively.
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse populations.
  • Build relationships and manage expectations to ensure a high level of service.
Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
  • Regular physical attendance is essential.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing between 20 to 49 pounds.
  • Capability to handle objects exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Proficiency in using manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform various physical tasks.
  • Experience with equipment that requires careful handling to prevent injury.
  • Adaptability to fluctuating work schedules.
