The University of Virginia is inviting applications for several Animal Care Specialist positions. The Animal Care Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of animals through effective husbandry practices and maintaining cleanliness within the facility. Responsibilities include routine tasks that are assigned at the task level, working closely under the guidance of veterinary professionals. The role requires flexibility, as incumbents will work on a rotating schedule that encompasses weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct health inspections of animals, manage the disposal of deceased animals, maintain accurate records, and track data meticulously.
- Oversee animal husbandry practices to ensure optimal care.
- Adhere to biosafety protocols during daily operations.
- Administer experimental treatments to animals when necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Up to 25% of time:
Kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping, twisting, lifting (up to 40 lbs.), carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders and stairs, and fine finger manipulation (e.g., keyboarding).
26-50% of time:
Traveling and repetitive motion.
51-75% of time:
Standing for extended periods, using both hands, and independent hand movements.
Protective Equipment:
Disposable gloves, protective clothing, surgical masks, and ear protection are mandatory when working with certain animals or in specific areas.
Sensory Requirements:
Vision (with or without corrective lenses), depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, near vision, hearing, and speaking.
- A high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least one year of relevant experience.
- Preference will be given to candidates with laboratory or animal handling experience.
- Strong attention to detail is essential.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is mandatory. Compliance with health policies is required.
Benefits: A selection of three health plans, vision and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, benefits savings accounts, starting with 22 days of paid time off annually, in addition to 12 or more paid holidays, 8 weeks of paid parental leave, short-term disability, and educational assistance after the first year of employment.
Compensation: Starting salary is $17.00 per hour.
