The Medical Assistant Certified is a vital member of our healthcare team, providing indirect and direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality.
Key Responsibilities- Under the direction of the provider, contribute to the completion of patients' chief complaints, including vital signs, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature.
- Document patient/family needs, participate in planning and implementing care for patients, and administer ordered medications within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
- Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
- Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
- Demonstrate standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
- Maintain clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
- Prepare patients for the physician, maintain a safe and supportive environment, and ensure the availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
- Assist with virtual health visits, including setting up the visit, pre-charting, contacting patients, troubleshooting issues, and obtaining chief complaints and health maintenance checks.
- Document in electronic medical records accurately and appropriately, manage in-basket messages, and perform front desk workflows as needed.
- Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA).
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
- High School/GED (required), completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
- Completion of externship or clinical lab training.
- 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience.
- Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
- Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
- Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
- Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
- Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
- Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
