Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or Charge Nurse, the Patient Safety Coordinator (PSC) is tasked with providing continuous in-person observation and supportive interaction to address the immediate safety needs of patients. This role involves monitoring patients either directly in their rooms or through remote observation systems, ensuring timely responses to patient requests and facilitating optimal care. The PSC is responsible for communicating any changes in patient conditions to the nursing staff promptly and demonstrates proficiency in all relevant procedures appropriate to the patient demographics served.
Key Responsibilities:
- Working under the direct guidance of the RN, the PSC will conduct direct surveillance of patients to foster a safer environment. This includes monitoring for unsafe actions such as attempting to remove medical devices, getting out of bed without assistance, or exhibiting self-harm behaviors. The PSC will utilize therapeutic communication, reorientation techniques, and distraction methods to redirect patients with respect and empathy.
- The PSC will provide regular updates and reports on patient status, including notifying nursing staff if a patient expresses thoughts of self-harm or harm to others. Collaboratively with the Registered Nurse, the PSC will help establish patient care goals and interventions, directing any inquiries regarding patient care to the appropriate nurse or physician.
- The PSC assists patients with daily living activities, which may include serving meals, feeding patients as needed, assisting with mobility, and ensuring hydration and nourishment between meals. After meals, the PSC will organize the dining area and prepare items for collection.
- Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization in patient rooms and bathrooms, the PSC will assist the Hospitality Services Department by tidying up during their shift.
- The PSC actively contributes to a healing atmosphere by ensuring a quiet environment around the patient’s room.
- Assists with patient ambulation as needed.
- Adheres to the guidelines set forth for Patient Safety Advocates.
- Safeguards the confidentiality of patient information.
- Familiarizes themselves with fire, disaster, and safety protocols relevant to their work area.
- Performs additional duties as assigned, including those outlined in the Patient Safety Advocate Guidelines.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- No prior experience necessary.
- Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Responder course must be completed during orientation and renewed biannually.
