Position Overview
JOB SUMMARY:
The Nurse Triage Specialist is responsible for independently organizing and delivering professional nursing care tailored to a designated patient demographic, adhering to established medical and nursing care protocols. This role involves managing and coordinating patient care through telecommunications within the Ambulatory Care Nursing framework. The nurse will provide comprehensive services to patients and their families, following the standards set by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. The position also includes leadership responsibilities, guiding team members and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure care is appropriate for various age groups and developmental stages.
SCHEDULE:
Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited School of Nursing and possess a minimum of two years of acute care experience. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. Experience in acute care within the last decade is highly desirable, as is prior experience in Telephone Triage and familiarity with Health Insurance and Managed Care principles.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
A current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina is required, along with Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification. Licensure in other states may be necessary based on legal requirements or client contracts. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) certifications may be required within one year in specific areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Delivers patient-centered care, partnering with patients and families to optimize health management while respecting their cultural values, individual needs, health objectives, and treatment preferences.
- Utilizes critical thinking and clinical judgment to facilitate timely care and treatment, particularly for patients presenting complex or potentially life-threatening conditions assessed through telecommunication technologies.
- Ensures effective scheduling and follow-up on test results for healthcare providers, employing active listening and evidence-based practices to communicate test results and medication information to patients.
- Adheres to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses in all professional responsibilities and patient care.
- Engages in continuous professional development by maintaining competencies, identifying educational needs, and pursuing relevant learning opportunities. Actively participates in professional practice models, shared governance, and peer review processes to enhance clinical excellence and leadership.
- Prioritizes patient safety and quality of care by implementing appropriate nursing interventions, including identifying patient needs, conducting health education, advocating for patients, coordinating health services, and evaluating patient outcomes.
- Maintains awareness of care teams to ensure effective coordination of patient care, self-management, and communication.
- Adapts communication styles to accommodate diverse patient backgrounds.
- Exhibits strong assessment, critical thinking, and customer service skills.
- Performs additional duties as required.
