Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Probate Clerk to join our team at Union County. As a key member of our Probate Judges Office, you will be responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical tasks to support the efficient operation of our office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accept and process marriage license applications, issue licenses and certificates, and determine if estates need to be probated
  • Open, monitor, and close estates, file wills, and set up and monitor conservatorships, guardianships, and trusts
  • Prepare mental health and alcohol/drug papers and orders for patients to be picked up by law enforcement officers
  • Scan and record estate and marriage records and other documents
  • Prepare reports for the SC Court Administration and Department of Health and Environmental Control
  • Research and prepare copies of genealogical records for the public
  • Notarize papers as requested and serve as a court reporter and transcriber for hearings
  • Receive, record, and submit various fees and payments
  • Respond to public inquiries, requests for information, and complaints
  • Prepare and process a variety of reports, records, and documents
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus additional coursework in business, paralegal studies, or a related field
  • Five to eleven months of responsible clerical or administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Notary Public Certification
  • Ability to take shorthand or perform speed writing with speed and accuracy
Working Conditions

This is a sedentary to light work position that requires the ability to exert light physical effort, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials of light weight (up to 10 pounds). The position also requires extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
