Job Summary

As a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist at Advocate Health, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care through the use of advanced imaging technologies. Your expertise in sonography will enable you to accurately diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, making a significant impact on the lives of our patients.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate ultrasound equipment to perform general, vascular, and cardiac procedures/studies, ensuring accurate and efficient results.
• Review patient medical records to obtain necessary clinical information, including patient history, lab results, and physician orders, to ensure exam accuracy.
• Position patients and select proper transducers and technical factors for accurate ultrasound procedures, adjusting factors as needed to attain the appropriate images.
• Ensure patient safety, mental, and physical comfort throughout the examination process.
• Use cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information, and images.
• Accurately identify and label images, including patient name, medical record unit (MRU) number, and location or position of scan on all images.
• Maintain records in accordance with various regulatory agencies and enter patient and study information into the radiology information system, documenting billing codes of procedures performed to ensure accurate patient charges.
• Identify equipment performance issues, communicate to appropriate staff, and evaluate new products and equipment for possible future use.
• Analyze sonograms, synthesize sonographic information and medical history, and communicate findings to the appropriate physician.
• Serve as a technical resource, role model, and/or preceptor for students and staff, acting as a resource to staff at your facility and throughout the system.
• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, or cost containment projects/initiatives at a site, market, or system level, and in the achievement/maintenance of laboratory accreditation.

Requirements

• Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with Abdomen issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Med Sonography (ARDMS) within 0 months, unless department leader has determined it is not required.
• Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with OB/GYN issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Med Sonography (ARDMS) within 0 months, unless department leader has determined it is not required.
• Vascular Technologist (RVT) registration issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within 0 months, unless department leader has determined it is not required, or Vascular Sonography (VS) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within 0 months, unless department leader has determined it is not required, or Vascular Specialist (RVS) registration issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) within 0 months, unless department leader has determined it is not required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 6 months.

Education and Experience

• Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in Sonography.
• Typically requires 2 years of experience in a Sonographer role.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Proficiency in all general and/or vascular sonographic procedures routinely performed in the hiring department.
• Ability to use independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
• Ability to work effectively with others towards common department goals, actively and positively contributing to morale and teamwork.
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients and caregivers using excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Advanced knowledge of aseptic techniques.
• Knowledge of and adherence to department, facility, and organization policies and protocols.
• Ability to prioritize, work independently, and manage simultaneous assignments.
• Ability to be flexible in schedule and adaptable to constant change.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, and twist throughout the workday.
• Must be able to lift up to 50lbs from floor to waist, lift up to 20lbs over the head, and carry up to 40lbs a reasonable distance.
• Must be able to push/pull with 30lbs of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150lbs with a second person present.
• Must have clear speech, vision, and hearing.
• May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids; therefore, personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
• Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
