Your Future in Risk Management Starts Here

At Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC), we pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive workplace that values innovative ideas and diverse perspectives.

POSITION SUMMARY

MPC stands as a prominent player in the downstream energy sector, operating the largest refining system in the United States, with a remarkable capacity of 3 million barrels per day across 13 refineries. Our integrated operations leverage pipelines, terminals, and barges to enhance efficiency.

Marathon Petroleum Supply and Trading (MST) plays a pivotal role within MPC, focusing on sourcing advantageous feedstocks and maximizing product value. This dynamic trading environment necessitates a robust Commercial Risk team to support its operations.

The Commercial Risk team is vital to MST, tasked with assessing daily positions, profit and loss (PNL), and exposure, thereby enabling effective trading and hedging activities alongside financial analysis and reporting. The roles within Commercial Risk are essential for monitoring trading performance and ensuring the organization extracts value from its supply and trading functions through in-depth financial analysis and strong commercial insight. The team guarantees that financial outcomes align with market dynamics, providing independent oversight of trading activities while adhering to the company's established guidelines.

We are currently seeking a dedicated analyst to join our Commercial Risk team. In collaboration with the trading team, you will manage a portfolio of supply and trading activities, working closely with traders and schedulers. Your responsibilities will include defining daily hedges to mitigate market risks associated with inventory and facilitating discussions regarding performance and the effects of price fluctuations on your portfolio.

This position offers a pathway for career advancement within Risk/Middle Office, with future leadership opportunities and potential transitions into derivative or physical trading roles, as the Risk organization serves as a key talent pipeline for these areas.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are in search of a proactive and detail-oriented Risk professional to enhance our Commercial Risk team. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in risk management, analytics, and reporting. This role is critical for ensuring accurate monitoring, analysis, and reporting of the company's exposure to various risks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Generate and validate daily portfolio position and Marked to Market (MtM) reports, assisting in the analysis of portfolio returns.
  • Conduct independent assessments of market risk and perform financial analyses on trading PNL, issuing reports on portfolio positions and challenging traders on strategies.
  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders, including Accounting, Operations, Schedulers, and Traders, to refine processes that ensure timely and accurate exposure information.
  • Verify inputs to MtM results for compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Test and validate new data sources to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of position data compilation.
  • Develop and maintain weekly and monthly analytical reports that equip commercial leadership with insights for informed decision-making and strategy optimization.
  • Streamline and automate processes to enhance efficiency in daily operations.
  • Support the team on various ad-hoc projects as needed.
  • Coordinate with IT Services and other departments to improve systems for gathering, analyzing, and reporting risk management activities.
REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Accounting, or a related field is required.
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in financial analysis and reporting, preferably in energy, trading, banking, or capital markets.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk analytics or risk management within a trading group for physical commodities.
SKILLS
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering collaboration across teams.
  • Self-driven with the ability to work independently and provide constructive challenges to trading strategies.
  • Solid understanding of market exposure and mark-to-market reporting.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of risk management policies and procedures.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, regulations, and best practices in risk management.
  • Innovative mindset, comfortable with change and challenging existing processes.
  • Proficient in computer skills, particularly Excel; experience with Power BI and/or Tableau is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Right Angle is a plus.
The successful candidate will be positioned at a level that reflects their experience and qualifications.
