Phlebotomy Specialist

**Job Summary**

Under the supervision of a laboratory assistant supervisor, this role performs venipunctures and capillary sticks to obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages. The position involves a high degree of office work and other lab duties as assigned. The successful candidate will reflect the mission statement and philosophy of Memorial Health System in their daily work habits and interactions.

**Qualifications**

• High School Graduate or Equivalent required
• Required to be PBT (ASCP) certified within two years
• Training: Six to twelve months on-the-job training required
• Experience: None required, six to twelve months of experience as a phlebotomist preferred

**Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

• Knowledge and techniques in collecting blood specimens using various options
• Understanding of sterile techniques to prevent patient harm
• Knowledge of regulations of laboratory equipment and supplies
• Knowledge of hospital rules and regulations
• Ability to work with a variety of people and adapt to changing situations

**Performance Requirements**

• A high degree of concentration is needed to avoid mislabeling tubes and collecting supplies
• Responsible for decisions that could result in extra cost to the hospital or patient

**Physical Demands**

• A lot of time is spent climbing stairs, walking, sitting, and standing
• A high degree of touch is needed to determine small, deep, and/or unstable veins
• Must be able to recognize all colors
• Moderate lifting is required

**Special Demands**

• Must be dependable, cooperative, and mentally alert
• Must be adaptable and willing to perform a variety of tasks assigned
• Must have a valid operator license and reliable, insured personal transportation for courier travel
