Nursing Assistant Job Description

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Nursing Assistant to join our team at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As a Nursing Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the overall success of our healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care, including feeding, bathing, dressing, positioning, and transferring patients.
  • Obtain vital signs and capillary blood glucose results.
  • Document patient care and education.
  • Perform procedures such as enemas, wound care, tube feedings, and suctioning.
  • Apply creams, lotions, and administer medications under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Assist with examinations and medical procedures, including preparing and positioning patients, obtaining equipment and supplies.
  • Perform as a sitter to observe patients when necessary for suicide prevention, fall reduction, and risk of harm to self/other.
  • Set up equipment such as suction equipment, oxygen, cooling blankets, etc.

Requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States.
  • One year above high school with courses related to the nursing assistant occupation.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Preferred experience: Certified Nursing Assistant Level I or Certified Nursing Assistant Level II.
  • Preferred level of education: High School plus 1-2 years college in a health-related field.
  • Preferred certification: CNA I or CNA II.

Working Conditions:

  • Heavy lifting and carrying of 45 pounds and over.
  • Repetitive pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, bending, kneeling.
  • Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
  • Use of safe patient handling equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.
  • Long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
  • Transferring patients and objects may be required.

Education:

  • A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
