Key Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), seeking necessary training and documentation for applicable SOPs, while performing various procedures on animals, including but not limited to:
  • Clinical observations, monitoring food consumption, recording body weights, urine collection, administering and overseeing anesthesia, mating procedures, administering test and control substances, blood collection, restraint, euthanasia, tissue collection, catheter placement, feeding, food removal, and pre- and post-surgical observations on laboratory animals.
Execute additional laboratory or animal procedures as required by protocols and/or SOPs, for which training has been provided.Demonstrate proficiency in mouse IV injection.Support surgeons as necessary.Assist veterinarians as needed.Monitor and document all physical signs of animal health, reporting any study changes to the Supervisor and/or Study Director.Provide daily husbandry care and maintenance to ensure the health and cleanliness of research animals and their housing facilities, in compliance with established procedures and schedules that adhere to State and Federal regulations and guidelines from accrediting agencies (AAALAC).Maintain accurate and timely documentation of task completion.Collaborate with the study director to address quality assurance audits.Assist the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) in ensuring compliance with GLP.Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of laboratory spaces utilized.Work independently to manage time effectively and ensure tasks are completed as scheduled.Provide guidance and assistance to other technicians with various procedures as assigned.Support Study Directors and Sponsors in the development of innovative procedures.Perform minor recovery surgical procedures and major non-recovery surgical procedures.Complete other assigned duties, including cage washing and cleaning procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or AALAS certifications of LAT.
  • Experience with SQ, IM, IP, IV injections on laboratory animals including rodents, ferrets, rabbits, pigs, and small ruminants.
  • Proficient in mouse and rat IV drug administration.
  • Skilled in mouse and rat gavage techniques.
  • Experience in placing IV catheters.
  • Ability to intubate rodents and large animals.
  • Familiarity with anesthesia machines and equipment.
  • Experience in anesthesia monitoring.
  • Knowledge of x-ray imaging.
  • Experience in surgical instrument sterilization.
  • Understanding of laboratory animal diseases and the clinical recognition of abnormal conditions in laboratory animals.
  • Familiarity with animal research Federal Regulations (The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Animal Welfare Act, and Animal Welfare Regulations).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
