Position Overview

The primary role of the Operating Room Technician is to serve as a 'scrub technician' within the surgical environment and other clinical settings.

This technician, under the supervision of the physician and registered nurse, is accountable for the execution of AST Standards, ensuring safe and effective methodologies and processes for optimal patient care.

The Operating Room Technician must exhibit strong interpersonal abilities and a conscientious approach to surgical practices. This role involves preparing the surgical area prior to procedures, ensuring that all necessary instruments and sutures are ready for the surgical table.

Education:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is mandatory.

License:

N/A

Certification:

Current Surgical Technologist Certification is preferred.

Completion of BCLS certification is required by the end of the orientation period, with maintenance of current BCLS certification thereafter.

Experience:

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.

Reports to:

OR Lead Coordinator and Patient Care Manager.

Supervises:

None.

Physical Demands:

This position requires engaging in various physical activities throughout daily tasks.

Work is moderately active:

It involves standing with frequent movement around the facility and may require travel to different locations within the service area.

Tasks may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects, including patients, with assistance when necessary.

Safe lifting practices are essential, and employees should seek help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, utilizing available support, such as lifting devices or additional staff. Exposure to bodily fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may pose a risk of infectious disease, is part of the job.

Work involves repetitive motions:
Significant use of wrists, hands, and fingers while operating standard office equipment, such as a computer keyboard.

Ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction, is necessary; fine discrimination in sound is required.

Close visual acuity is needed, with the ability to shift focus from a computer monitor to printed materials for data comparison.


Must maintain activity levels for extended periods without undue fatigue.

Flexibility in working schedules is expected, with potential changes based on hospital needs for days off, shifts, or weekends.


Mental Demands:

Must demonstrate strong mental acuity, assessment, and decision-making skills. Effective communication abilities, both verbal and written, are essential for relaying information in person and over the phone.
Emotional stability is crucial for managing high-stress situations.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is required.

Attention to detail and the capacity to multitask in complex scenarios are necessary. Collaborative and respectful working relationships throughout the organization and with external entities are vital.

Special Demands:

Exceptional customer service skills and professional demeanor are required.

Proficiency in computer usage (keyboard skills are essential) and familiarity with office technology (e.g., telephone, fax) is necessary.

Intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook and Word is expected.

Ability to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment based on the approved scope of practice and apply professional skills to a diverse patient population is essential.

A thorough understanding of AST process standards is required.


A valid driver's license is necessary, as the role involves travel throughout the service area, with the employee providing their own transportation.
