About the Role

NFP, a leading insurance broker and consultant, is seeking a highly skilled Group Benefits Underwriter to join our team. As a Group Benefits Underwriter, you will play a critical role in providing underwriting expertise and support to our clients, building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and utilizing your underwriting knowledge to effectively market underwriting decisions to carriers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide value-added services to clients by responding promptly to inquiries, providing underwriting opinions, and assisting with negotiations.
  • Communicate information regarding carriers' underwriting guidelines, niches, and practices to clients.
  • Consult with field underwriters, principals, and home office underwriters to gather additional information and secure favorable underwriting offers.
  • Client servicing, including financial reporting and client questions and needs.
  • Prepare financial reports for monthly and quarterly reviews, including claims, premium, membership, high claimants, and network utilization.
  • Develop renewal projections for medical, dental, and vision and prepare renewal financial summaries.
  • Prepare and present renewal decision tools, populate renewal models, and update underwriting formulas and assumptions for large clients.

Requirements

  • Medical and financial underwriting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sense of urgency.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to exercise judgment independently.
  • Successful background in initiating and enhancing relationships with management, sales professionals, customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to negotiate while maintaining positive relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of the group insurance marketplace, including alternative funding methods and industry trends.

Education and/or Experience

  • Four-year college or university degree.
  • 1-3 years of related experience and/or training with a carrier, consultant, or broker.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

  • MA Life, Accident, and Health License required.
