A Diagnostic Imaging Specialist (also known as a Cardiac Catheterization Technician) works alongside cardiologists and other medical staff to perform diagnostic procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab. These procedures diagnose and treat heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and structural heart problems.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Pre-Procedure Preparation
    • Prepare the lab environment: Ensure all necessary equipment and tools are sterile, functional, and properly set up (e.g., catheters, guidewires, contrast agents, X-ray machines).
    • Verify patient information: Confirm medical history, allergies, and consent forms before the procedure begins.
    • Patient preparation: Set up monitoring equipment and ensure proper positioning for optimal procedure results.
    • Patient education: Provide clear explanations of the procedure and answer questions.
  2. Assisting with Procedures
    • Assist physicians: Collaborate during cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, electrophysiological studies, and other interventional procedures.
    • Handle instruments: Sterilize and correctly place catheters, balloons, and stents.
    • X-ray imaging: Operate fluoroscopy equipment and assist with diagnostic tests like angiograms.
    • Vital sign monitoring: Track heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and report any abnormalities.
    • Medication administration: Administer medications under physician direction, ensuring patient safety.
  3. Post-Procedure Care
    • Monitor patients: Check for immediate complications after the procedure, such as bleeding or changes in vital signs.
    • Transfer care: Assist in transferring the patient to recovery, ensuring comfort and safety.
    • Recovery support: Monitor cardiac rhythm, vital signs, and insertion sites for complications.
    • Post-procedure instructions: Educate patients on post-operative care, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
  4. Equipment Management and Maintenance
    • Maintain equipment: Clean, sterilize, and troubleshoot cath lab machinery and instruments.
    • Supply management: Order necessary supplies and manage inventory to ensure readiness for procedures.
  5. Patient Monitoring and Safety
    • Continuous monitoring: Track patient vital signs during procedures, ensuring optimal conditions.
    • Safety protocols: Adhere to infection control and radiation safety guidelines.
  6. Collaboration with the Medical Team
    • Interdisciplinary collaboration: Work closely with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care.
  7. Education and Training
    • Continuing education: Stay updated on advancements in cardiac catheterization techniques and best practices.
  8. Quality Control and Compliance
    • Regulatory adherence: Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and Joint Commission requirements.
