Role Summary:


The MRI Specialist is responsible for executing intricate tasks related to the operation of high-field strength magnets and associated apparatus to generate superior quality MRI images.

This role includes ensuring a secure MRI environment at all times.

Key Responsibilities:
Conduct procedures or examinations as directed by a licensed medical professional for diagnostic evaluation or therapeutic intervention.


Execute complex tasks associated with the operation of high-field strength magnets and related equipment to produce high-quality MRI images.

Select and operate the magnetic resonance system, surface coils, and physiologic gating devices to achieve optimal results. Choose appropriate pulse sequences while considering established protocols and other factors affecting data acquisition parameters. Assess MRI scans for technical quality, perform post-processing, complete MRI exams in electronic medical records, and transmit to PACS. Maintain the four (4) MRI safety zones in accordance with ACR guidelines. Ensure timely acquisition of high-quality MRI scans. Collaborate with radiologists to develop new protocols and MRI imaging techniques.

Screen patients and others according to MRI safety guidelines. Gather patient history, complete and verify accurate consents, informed consent, and/or permits as necessary.

Provide patient instructions and education to achieve desired results, foster cooperation, and reduce anxiety, including monitoring patients through audio/visual means during examinations.

Position patients for MRI scans using immobilization and protective equipment to comply with regulations while applying principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to patients, self, and others.

Position patients and equipment to optimally demonstrate the anatomical area of interest, respecting the patient's comfort and safety. Attend to the psychological and physical needs of patients during MRI procedures. Adhere to aseptic techniques and apply universal precautions consistently.

Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.

Perform venipuncture or IM injection for contrast media or other ordered medications as necessary for the MRI procedure within the scope of practice.

Operate pressure/power injectors for contrast media injection. May administer oral and/or rectal contrast as required. May perform lab draws as applicable.

Assist radiologists with MRI procedures (biopsies, etc.). Ensure that time-outs are conducted.

Coordinate scheduling and patient flow. Demonstrate proficiency in clerical skills. Assist in inventory management.

Educate, train, orient, and support new staff members. Provide educational opportunities for student technologists.

Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and perform BLS as necessary.

Adhere to policies, procedures, and safety standards. Complete required educational assignments annually. Work towards achieving departmental goals and objectives, and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education:


No specific educational requirements; however, must meet the standards for achieving the necessary license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.


Minimum Experience:


Must have successfully completed an educational program accredited by a recognized body acceptable to the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or ARMRIT (American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists).


Licensure Requirement:

Must possess and maintain one of the following:

Path 1:
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ARRT (R) and within one year ARRT (MR)

Path 2:
Nuclear Medicine Technology certification board certified (NMTCB) or equivalent ARRT (N) and within one year ARRT (MR) required.

Path 3:
Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and within one year ARRT (MR) required.

Path 4:
American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) certification required.
