Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Commuter Rail Maintenance Technician to join our team at the Metropolitan Council. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on non-revenue vehicles and equipment. This includes greasing bushings and bearings, changing oil and other fluids, and performing other routine maintenance tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on non-revenue vehicles and equipment
  • Use hand tools, grease gun, fluid dispensers, torque wrenches, and other equipment to perform maintenance tasks
  • Cut metal, wood, and other materials to repair non-revenue vehicles and equipment
  • Perform monthly light track and switch maintenance, including weed control, track joint and fastener repairs, rail-yard snow removal, and switch and operating stand lubrication and adjustment
  • Operate small tools and equipment, including rail saw, rail drill, and spiking equipment
  • Assist Designated Track Inspector for monthly walking track inspections
  • Assist with track alignment, gauging operation, and repairing tracks at turnouts and at-grade crossings
  • Assist in maintenance and inspection of switch heaters
  • Assist with inventory of spare parts to ensure parts are available to carry out track maintenance
  • Establish roadway work protection for facilities work at support and public facilities for colleagues and contractors as required
  • Assist Electronic Technician staff in performing preventative maintenance and repairs of all station equipment, including Electronic Destination Signs, Communications Systems boxes, and Public Address Systems
  • Attend safety and training meetings
  • Assist in emergency situations
  • Perform miscellaneous shop work, including fueling and cleaning vehicles, directing traffic, emptying trash, filling windshield wash, driving forklift, moving recycling bins, measuring fluid tanks using dip stick, moving non-revenue vehicles and equipment, and cleaning work areas using power sweepers and scrubbers, pressure washers, chemicals, soap, and floor dry
  • Perform snow removal and operate snow removal equipment, including self-propelled and handheld removal equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent
Requirements
  • High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in mechanics/truck, bus, industrial, or other heavy-duty equipment repair
  • Associate's degree or two-year vocational program in automotive, diesel mechanics, or closely related field
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Forklift certification within one (1) month after hired
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using scan tools and multi-meters to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical problems
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of mechanical systems and processes
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
