We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Technician III to join our team at Smithfield Foods. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of equipment and machinery, as well as performing repairs and maintenance tasks to minimize production downtime.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipment and machinery, and the safe use of tools and safety of others working in the immediate area.
  • Operate, repair, and maintain all assigned equipment, including ammonia equipment, compressed air, dehumidification equipment, steam, cooling systems, air and water filters, plumbing, heat exchangers, water treatment, heaters, level controls, and water systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair electrical systems, electrical controls, electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, blowers/fans, and resolve equipment malfunctions by evaluating performance breakdowns, identifying root cause, safely repairing the equipment, and taking actions to prevent recurring failures.
  • Coordinate with supervisor regarding all short-term repairs and long-term repairs to minimize production downtime.
  • Ensure all assigned work and preventative maintenance tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Follow all work instructions and document all appropriate records to meet requirements set forth by OSHA, EPA, USDA, and plant management.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1+ years of related experience and/or training in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 4 years' direct experience in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing maintenance environment.
  • Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma, or Associate's Degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school is a plus.
  • Possess the ability to function effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of team personnel and outside contractors.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, genie lift, or scissor lift.
  • Can understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend work orders, instructions, daily reports, and machine manuals.
  • Ability to receive and relate orders/information using various communication devices.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
  • The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds utilizing the buddy system or specifically designed lifting devices.
  • Specific vision includes close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
