CALPERS PUBLIC SAFETY RETIREMENT SYSTEM

Tier I 3% @ 50
(Classic-former employees originally hired on or before 12/13/12 and returning to Nevada County).
Tier II 3% @ 55
(Hired by a CalPERS employer between 7/24/11-12/31/12 with less than 6 months between separation and hire date).
Tier III PEPRA 2.7% @ 57
(Hired by any CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13).

Examples of Duties

Responsibilities of our Deputy Sheriffs include:
  • Patrolling designated areas by vehicle, boat, UTV, or on foot, responding to calls for assistance in protecting life and property.
  • Conducting preliminary investigations, interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence, and documenting statements related to suspected criminal activities; presenting findings in court.
  • Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in investigations and arrests; maintaining departmental records and files.
  • When assigned to a contract city/town, investigating and documenting traffic incidents, apprehending individuals driving under the influence, and enforcing traffic laws.
  • Performing duties as a jailer and/or bailiff as required.
Education and Experience Required

The minimum age for Peace Officers is 21 years of age.

Completion of high school or equivalent is required. A minimum of 30 college units from an accredited institution is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Proof of either A) or B) listed below must be submitted at the time of application:

A) Completion of POST basic training course within six (6) years if never employed as a peace officer or three (3) years if previously employed;

OR

(B) Completion of POST basic requalification course with no more than a three (3) year break in service (possession of a valid POST Basic certificate will satisfy this requirement).

A valid PELLETB T-Score of 43 or higher is required, with the score not older than three years at the time of application.

The POST PELLETB exam is conducted by the Nevada County Sheriff's Office for candidates without a valid POST T-Score.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Ability to reach, bend, grasp, climb, and run; strength to restrain individuals alone or with assistance while wearing required equipment; capacity to lift or maneuver individuals weighing over 165 pounds; ability to sit for extended periods in a patrol vehicle; manual dexterity to operate restraints, firearms, and standard office equipment; vision sufficient for firearms certification; and effective communication skills.
Willingness to work rotating shifts, on-call, weekends, and holidays.

Other Requirements:
Must be a U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to application. Candidates must pass a psychological evaluation, medical examination, and background investigation.
