Program Overview:
The TRiO Student Support Services Program is a federally-funded initiative designed to provide essential academic, career, and personal support to first-generation, low-income students, and those with disabilities.
Position Summary:
The TRiO Student Support Services Advisor plays a vital role in delivering personalized advising to designated TRiO students. This position is responsible for developing programs that enhance students' academic performance and overall success.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct individualized advising sessions to address the academic, financial, and personal needs of students.
2. Provide insights on career pathways and graduate school options, assisting students in formulating actionable plans.
3. Create and implement tailored action plans to facilitate students' academic and personal achievements.
4. Maintain comprehensive records of student profiles and progress to monitor development and outcomes.
5. Address conflicts and crises effectively, providing appropriate referrals as needed.
6. Assist students with course selection and registration, collaborating with faculty advisors to align academic and career objectives.
7. Work closely with financial aid, student accounts, and registrar's office to support students in completing necessary documentation and meeting deadlines.
Program Development:
Design and facilitate workshops on various topics, including academic, social, leadership, career, personal, financial, and cultural themes. Oversee the TRiO mentorship and ambassador programs, and assist in organizing the on-campus summer orientation.
Collaboration:
Engage with university departments, faculty, tutors, and academic support staff to advocate for the academic needs of TRiO students. Collaborate with the director and staff on future initiatives to ensure effective program evaluation and growth.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or social sciences preferred.
- Experience in counseling or advising college students is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
- Background in academic youth programs, non-profits, or higher education, with exposure to crisis intervention and advocacy counseling.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- A genuine interest in supporting low-income and first-generation college students in overcoming challenges.
