As a Senior Planning Engineer at ERCOT, you will engage in a collaborative environment that allows you to influence and shape the future design of the electric power grid while honing your engineering and leadership capabilities. Our esteemed system planning teams creatively conduct steady-state and dynamic contingency analyses utilizing cutting-edge power flow models.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct electrical engineering analysis and provide technical support for the planning and operation of the electric power system.
  • Implement effective system modeling and develop tools and procedures for system monitoring and control.
  • Perform system stability assessments and analyze both simulated and actual operating results.
  • Develop solutions for current and future system stability challenges and report findings and recommendations.
Specific Duties
  • Design and execute steady-state and dynamic contingency analyses using power system simulation models (e.g., PSSE, VSAT, or TSAT) under the guidance of senior engineers or management.
  • Run various scenarios and input variations to achieve robust results, analyze study accuracy, and assign confidence metrics.
  • Structure stability studies to ascertain system operating limits.
  • Assist in preparing study reports and procedures for ERCOT management and regulatory entities.
  • Review stakeholder reports to ensure technical accuracy and content quality.
  • Work independently on assignments and projects, making decisions on complex engineering scenarios.
  • Address complex engineering issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Coordinate and participate in stakeholder meetings, providing presentations and engaging with ERCOT personnel and market participants.
  • Foster strong working relationships with team members and other internal departments.
  • Guide projects and support teammates as assigned by management.
  • Mentor and advise less experienced engineers and analysts.
  • Lead multifunctional teams to gather input, address comments, and conduct studies.
  • Demonstrate expertise in power system software applications, spreadsheet programs, and database tools.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and industry best practices.
QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in such fields.
Required Experience
  • Experience in the electric utility industry is preferred.
  • Experience as a power system engineer in a similar role is preferred.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience conducting large-scale dynamic stability analyses using power system simulation tools (PSSE and TSAT).
  • Experience evaluating and updating power system dynamic models, particularly inverter-based resources (IBRs).
  • Experience in programming and developing simulation automation tools (Python).
  • Experience in enhancing transmission planning processes and familiarity with NERC reliability standards.
  • Experience with Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Work Location: This position is hybrid, requiring on-site presence as needed based on business requirements.
