San Francisco, California, United States Observable Full time

Observable is transforming the way organizations develop and distribute data applications by equipping developers with essential tools to craft their most effective dashboards, applications, and reports. Our open-source Framework empowers developers to construct dashboards locally, while our secure hosting service facilitates seamless sharing of data applications, enabling teams to uncover deeper insights collaboratively. We are proud of our vibrant community of data enthusiasts and are committed to expanding Observable's reach to teams and businesses of all sizes.

We are in search of a Senior Software Developer to become a vital member of our compact engineering team. Candidates should possess experience in professional web development, with openness to those who may have a stronger focus on either backend or frontend development. This role involves working on a new segment of the platform, where the majority of the features you will develop are original, rather than updates or maintenance tasks. You will engage in technical design and architecture in addition to coding. Our projects encompass the entire stack, from the open-source Framework library (TypeScript) to the cloud infrastructure that supports it (Cloudflare edge workers, R2, S3, Docker), as well as the API (TypeScript, Node, Postgres) and frontend (TypeScript, React).

While you may not have experience with every aspect, a willingness to learn is essential. Given our small team size, quick adaptation is necessary, and while formal training is limited, our team is eager to assist and engage in pair programming, fostering a culture of mutual teaching and learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions.
  • Collaborate within a close-knit engineering team that deploys new code into production multiple times daily.
  • Write code, create reliable and sustainable systems, and rapidly develop prototypes.
  • Take initiative, prioritize tasks, manage workloads, and adhere to project timelines.
  • Understand user needs (including participation in user support), ensuring a high-quality experience for our users alongside maintaining code quality.
  • Work effectively with a diverse team of skills, including engineering, design, product, and marketing.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in feature development across both frontend and backend technologies.
  • Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages, including but not limited to: JavaScript, Python, Go, or Ruby.
  • Strong foundation in computer science principles, including data structures, algorithms, and software design, coupled with excellent investigative and debugging skills.
  • Familiarity with open-source, cloud, or application platforms.
  • Ability to produce readable, maintainable, self-documenting, or well-documented code that addresses complex problems with simple, elegant solutions.

Join Our Team

Observable's comprehensive solution encompasses our open-source Framework that developers utilize to create high-performing, expressive data applications; a platform for hosting projects; and tools to manage data workflows. Our team operates fully remotely, and we are dedicated to cultivating a collaborative, data-driven culture while maintaining a fast-paced environment.

We appreciate your interest and look forward to connecting with you.
