Job Overview

Diesel mechanics or technicians are responsible for performing mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment in transit and freight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and diagnostic tests to determine condition and identify worn and damaged parts.
  • Complete preventive maintenance, install components and parts, control corrosion, and complete winterization procedures.
  • Correct vehicle deficiencies by repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, components, and parts within systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Interpret diagnostic test results accurately and write detailed inspection reports and repair plans.
  • Collaborate with other diesel technicians, perform test drives to gauge performance, and adhere to inspection procedure checklists.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED certificate; diesel technician or mechanic degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years' experience with diesel engine and truck repair.
  • Valid State or Federal A/C Certification; Engine certification (Isuzu, Cummins) preferred.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to lift 50 pounds of material regularly.

Estimated Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year based on location and experience.
