Job Overview

As a Sign Language Communication Specialist, you will play a vital role in facilitating effective communication between students, teachers, and staff at our educational institution. This position requires a minimum of 1+ years of experience in sign language interpretation and a strong understanding of Deaf culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa to ensure seamless communication.
  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with hearing impairments.
  • Assist in classroom instruction by interpreting lectures, discussions, and instructional materials.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive environment for students with hearing impairments, promoting their engagement and participation in classroom activities.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group sign language instruction to students as needed.
  • Help students develop language and communication skills, both expressive and receptive.
  • Stay updated on the latest techniques and advancements in sign language interpretation and Deaf culture.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpretation, Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent from a recognized certifying organization.
  • State-specific teaching or interpreting certifications, as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
