Job Summary

The Shawnee Mission School District is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Paraprofessional to join our team. As a key member of our special education department, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs and abilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers with educational and non-educational activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Implement instructional programs developed by special education professionals and support personnel, promoting student growth and development.
  • Direct small groups of students in teacher-planned instructional activities, fostering a supportive and engaging learning atmosphere.
  • Collect and record instructional and behavioral data, providing valuable insights for teacher planning and student progress.
  • Assist with physical needs of students, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
  • Maintain classroom management programs and handle routine discipline, promoting a positive and respectful classroom culture.
  • Score and check papers, ensuring accurate and timely feedback to students.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment, enhancing the learning experience for students.
  • Prepare instructional materials and copy documents as directed by teachers, supporting the smooth operation of the classroom.
  • Record information for reports, providing valuable data for teacher planning and student progress.
  • Make charts, bulletin boards, and other visual materials, promoting a visually appealing and engaging learning environment.
  • Complete worksheets and reports as directed by teachers, ensuring accurate and timely completion of tasks.
  • Supervise students in place of teachers during staffings or in emergency situations, ensuring student safety and well-being.
  • Consider all classroom behavior and achievements confidential, maintaining a professional and respectful attitude.
  • Assist teachers in supervision of field trips and school parties, promoting a positive and inclusive school culture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to student success.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • On-the-job training sessions required by the State Department of Education for continued employment.
  • Good interpersonal relationships and communication skills.
  • Ability to physically restrain students, when necessary, in compliance with accepted district disciplinary procedures.
  • Ability to lift or assist in lifting non-ambulatory students, ensuring student safety and well-being.
  • Ability to proficiently operate classroom equipment, including DVD players, computers, and copy machines.
  • Ability to lift and move 20 to 30 pounds of classroom equipment, promoting a safe and efficient learning environment.
  • 48 hours of college credit or a passed para pro assessment, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development.
