The New York Public Library is seeking a dedicated and innovative professional to serve as a Young Adult Librarian. The ideal candidate will be passionate about empowering youth and committed to enriching their lives through library services.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of the Managing Librarian, the Young Adult Librarian will:
- Deliver reference assistance and resource guidance to young patrons utilizing various print, media, and digital tools.
- Collaborate with the Teen Center team and Youth Educational Services Department to design, promote, and assess engaging programs tailored to the needs of the community's youth, including reading initiatives, educational workshops, and creative arts.
- Engage in informal learning strategies and project-based educational methods.
- Provide mentorship to young adult patrons, fostering a welcoming and stimulating atmosphere.
- Work alongside the Teen Center team to curate and maintain a diverse and relevant Young Adult collection that meets community needs.
- Encourage teens to connect with library resources, helping them pursue their interests and discover new ones.
- Promote digital literacy and offer technology instruction appropriate for young adults, staying informed about trends in both print and digital resources.
- Conduct outreach to local organizations and schools to enhance library services and resources aimed at improving teens' reading skills.
- Ensure the Teen Center is a safe, inviting space filled with relevant materials.
- Oversee the activities of teen volunteers and advisory councils.
- Stay updated on trends in young adult literature and library services through professional development opportunities.
- Assume responsibility for library operations in the absence of supervisors.
- Assist with circulation tasks, including managing fines, reserves, and daily opening/closing procedures.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA accredited institution.
- Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York.
- Strong dedication to public service and the ability to engage with a diverse patron base.
- Experience in creating and implementing innovative programs for young adults.
- Knowledge of young adult literature and related resources.
- Proven ability to build partnerships with local organizations and educational institutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in various technology platforms, including MS Office and digital library resources.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with emerging technologies and trends in library services for young adults.
