Maricopa County's Office of the Public Defender is a leading provider of innovative, client-centered legal representation in the full range of criminal matters. With over 400 employees, we are one of the largest public defender offices in the country. Our attorneys and staff are dedicated to treating our clients with respect and dignity as we defend their constitutional rights in a court of law.

Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively assist in reviewing vehicle accident, fatality, and DUI cases
  • Provide expertise in the development of defense strategies and case theories
  • Conduct field investigations, including vehicle inspections, witness statements, and crime scene diagram preparation
  • Update attorneys regularly on the progress of investigations and recommendations for further initiatives or case preparation
  • Review case documents and recommend securing additional background information
  • Locate and interview potential witnesses, including in-state and out-of-state travel
  • Interface with criminal authorities, investigators, and other related agencies
Requirements
  • Three years of investigative experience with law enforcement, government, or military agency
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated experience and training as an Accident Investigator/Reconstructionist
  • Recognition as a court expert in accident investigation/reconstruction
  • Valid Arizona driver's license
Working Conditions
  • Work in dangerous environments, including local roads, highways, and crime scenes
  • High volume of work with an emphasis on accuracy
  • Viewing and reviewing traumatic subject matter
  • Assigned multiple cases and tasks with frequent changes and interruptions
