The Histology Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and analysis of tissue samples for diagnostic purposes. This position involves:

  • Accurately cutting, staining, and preparing tissue specimens for examination by the Pathologist.
  • Maintaining precise records of all testing procedures in compliance with established protocols.
  • Utilizing a microtome to section paraffin blocks, ensuring high-quality slides for routine and specialized staining.
  • Communicating effectively with team members to uphold workflow and regulatory standards.
Documentation and Compliance

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining thorough documentation such as variance forms and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Identifying and orienting different gross tissue structures accurately.
  • Embedding tissue samples according to standard operating procedures.
  • Addressing STAT cases and discrepancies promptly to facilitate continuous workflow.
Performance Standards

The technician is expected to:

  • Embed 35-40 quality cassettes and cut 20-25 quality slides per hour.
  • Meet continuing education requirements to maintain necessary certifications.
  • Complete one position-specific continuing education unit annually.
  • Obtain sections for recuts and special stains while ensuring proper control selection and processing.
