Position Overview

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Attorney will be integrated into the Claims and Litigation Division of the Office of Legal Affairs. The selected candidate will play a vital role within a team of claims attorneys managing medical malpractice claims against the largest municipal health care system in the nation. Responsibilities may encompass serving as claims counsel for various H+H facilities and overseeing the Division's vendor contracts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct management and oversight of external legal counsel specializing in medical malpractice defense, collaborating with Third-Party Administrators for claims management services, formulating effective defense strategies, recommending medical experts, establishing indemnity reserves, evaluating claim exposures, and steering claims towards suitable resolutions.
  • Reviewing and auditing billing from outside counsel, approving case management reports, and coordinating claims presentations for senior management.
  • Identifying claim patterns, collaborating with senior staff on risk management and quality assurance issues, and making recommendations for loss control and risk mitigation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A baccalaureate degree or equivalent, and LLB or JD from an accredited School of Law; and admission to the New York State Bar; and

2. Three (3) years of experience in the practice of law following admission to the Bar in areas such as litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, or employee relations; or

3. Two (2) years of experience in the practice of law following admission to the Bar in relevant areas, with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a professional or managerial capacity in applicable fields.
