Job Overview

The Landfill Operations Specialist is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service while performing semi-skilled labor associated with the management and maintenance of the County landfill. This role involves operating various heavy machinery, engaging with the public, processing payments, overseeing waste disposal, directing traffic, and managing access to the facility during operational hours.


SUPERVISION STRUCTURE

Direct supervision is provided by the Public Works Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not supervise any staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates a variety of light and heavy machinery, including but not limited to roll-off trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and compactors, essential for the effective operation of the County landfill.
  • Conducts routine maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
  • Performs inspections on equipment components such as tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels.
  • Engages with the public utilizing landfill services, collecting payments, directing traffic, and ensuring compliance with waste disposal regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records of all landfill users, including ticketing and daily financial logs.
  • Identifies customers who may be on a bad check list or require special billing arrangements for solid waste services.
  • Promotes and adheres to safe working practices while executing job responsibilities.
  • Provides assistance at the transfer station and in recycling operations as necessary.
  • Contributes to the upkeep of a clean and organized transfer station.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.

Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.

Experience: At least one year of experience in a related field or in performing similar duties.

Licenses and Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class 'B' CDL along with a current DOT medical card.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of disposal regulations and operational procedures for a subtitle D landfill, including the ability to interpret design plans and ensure compliance with CDPHE regulations.
  • Familiarity with practices, methods, and equipment utilized in landfill operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating various hand and power tools as well as light and heavy machinery.
  • Awareness of applicable laws and regulations governing landfill operations.
  • Ability to operate equipment effectively, including roll-off trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and compactors.
  • Capability to identify hazardous materials and the associated risks.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong customer service skills when interacting with clients and the public.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, agency representatives, and community members.
  • Basic math skills for performing calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Competence in maintaining daily logs and activity records.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work with hands raised above shoulder height and lift up to 100 pounds. The employee must have dexterity to grasp or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Requires repetitive movements typical of office-related tasks such as typing, sitting, standing, and communicating in person and via telephone.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift/carry heavier items.
