POSITION OVERVIEW AND REQUIREMENTS:

We are looking for a dedicated Advanced Materials Engineering Specialist to join our Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The mission of ARL/Penn State is to innovate and develop cutting-edge solutions to complex scientific, engineering, and technological challenges in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intelligence Community (IC). Your role will involve contributing to projects focused on materials design, enhancement, deposition, and characterization of materials such as ceramics, metals, semiconductors, and composites aimed at improving corrosion resistance, wear resistance, erosion resistance, thermal protection, or optical performance.

ARL is proud to be an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and encourages all transitioning military personnel to apply.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and execute experimental coating deposition trials for a diverse array of materials and coatings, including nanocomposite, nanolayered, multilayered, functionally graded, and multifunctional material systems aimed at enhancing properties and performance across various sectors such as aerospace, defense, tooling, biomedical, nuclear, microelectronics, and optics.
  • Establish experimental protocols for mechanical, environmental, and materials characterization testing.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations.
  • Guide, train, and collaborate with technical personnel in the setup, maintenance, and operation of electron beam physical vapor deposition (EBPVD) systems, magnetron sputtering systems, cathodic arc systems, and other vacuum technologies.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and undergraduate students.
Typical qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, with a Master's Degree preferred; a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Essential Skills/Experience:
  • Expertise in coating deposition methods such as EBPVD, magnetron sputtering, cathodic arc systems, and electrochemical/autocatalytic baths, including operation, maintenance, and process development.
  • Experience in coatings characterization through various techniques, including Tribology, optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet/visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (UV-VIS NIR), Raman spectroscopy, and optical profilometry.
  • Knowledge of vacuum system pumps, controls, electrical requirements, design, and proper integration of components.
  • Understanding of the development processes for ceramic and metallic (nano) polymer matrix composites.
  • Experience in the characterization and synthesis of polymer-based and hybrid coating systems.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively convey ideas and concepts to others.
Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Advanced techniques in coating deposition.
  • Experience with electron beam high heat flux testing, including beam development and control.
  • Proven track record in creating technical reports and documents, along with the ability to articulate ideas clearly in written form.
  • Possession of an active government security clearance.
Your workplace will be located on-site.

ARL at Penn State is a key component of one of the nation's leading research universities and serves as a center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies, particularly in naval missions and related fields.

Applicants will undergo a government security investigation, and U.S. citizenship is required for application. Employment with ARL will necessitate successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.

ARL is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion; we believe this is fundamental to our success as a Department of Defense designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). Our greatest achievements arise from leveraging the talents of a diverse workforce.
