Role Summary:
The Community Emergency Responder is a non-paid role dedicated to providing critical fire suppression, emergency medical assistance, and various emergency interventions. This position operates under high-pressure situations and often involves inherent risks. Supervision is provided regularly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to emergency incidents; extinguish fires; provide medical support; maintain and document detailed reports.
  • Engage in rigorous training to ensure readiness for emergencies. Participants in this role will attend drills and educational sessions focused on fire safety, disaster management, and related topics, ensuring skills remain sharp through continuous training.
  • Contribute to community outreach and educational initiatives; ensure all equipment and apparatus are in optimal working condition; assist in the evaluation and upkeep of tools and vehicles.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • No prior experience is necessary; comprehensive training will be provided. As a volunteer, you will acquire:
  • A solid understanding of fire suppression techniques, hazardous material incident management, and emergency response protocols.
  • Familiarity with local geography and road systems.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written directives; establish and maintain positive relationships with fellow volunteers, career personnel, and the public; proficient in record-keeping and report preparation.
  • Adherence to the organization's Volunteer Minimum Training Standards.
  • Commitment to performing duties safely, adhering to all safety protocols; ability to operate effectively in hazardous environments while managing physical and emotional stress.
  • Capability to learn and apply technical knowledge related to fire response; work effectively within a structured organization and respond to commands.
  • Maintain and operate firefighting tools and equipment; perform necessary maintenance and minor repairs; ensure efficient use of materials and supplies; undertake general upkeep of facilities.
  • Engage in community service initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records, incident reports, and daily logs to meet departmental requirements, including data entry tasks.

Special Requirements:
This role mandates the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to steel-toed footwear, safety goggles, gloves, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and N95 masks in designated risk areas.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position involves heavy physical activity, requiring the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force regularly, with frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds and constant exertion of up to 20 pounds. Tasks may include climbing, balancing, kneeling, and lifting. Effective communication skills are essential for conveying critical information, and auditory acuity is necessary for receiving detailed instructions. Visual capabilities must include color perception, night vision, and the ability to observe surroundings accurately. The role may expose individuals to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and potential exposure to hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Successful completion of the application process, including:
    • A background check, including fingerprinting.
    • Driving record evaluation.
    • Completion of online training modules.
    • CPR certification.
  • Commitment to complete at least one 12-hour shift weekly.
  • Enrollment in the next available certification courses, including:
    • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).
    • Volunteer Fire Academy (FFI-II).
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training.
  • Maintenance of issued personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Completion of an annual physical examination provided by the organization.
