Job SummaryThe Dankwa Lab at UMass Amherst is seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to contribute to ongoing research projects and support the lab's general research efforts. The lab focuses on understanding the molecular basis of severe malaria pathogenesis, employing a range of cellular and molecular biology approaches, as well as machine learning tools, to study the interaction of Plasmodium falciparum parasites with host cells.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain primary cell lines and parasite cultures.
- Conduct experiments with malaria parasites and primary cell lines.
- Collect, analyze, and present data.
- Prepare media and reagents.
- Order and organize lab supplies and reagents.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field.
- 1-2 years of laboratory experience or a related Master's degree preferred.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to take initiative, and willingness to learn.
- Experience in basic molecular and cell biology techniques, including media/reagent preparation, primary cell culture, gel electrophoresis, RNA purification, and RT-qPCR.
- Experience in microbiology techniques, such as sterile technique and culturing of microbes (parasites, bacteria).
- Experience in fluorescence/confocal microscopy.
- Training in unfamiliar techniques will be provided.
- Full-time position (40 hours per week).
- Typical work hours are from 8:30am to 5:00pm on weekdays, with occasional weekend work as part of the 40-hour work week.
- $32-40k, commensurate with experience.
