Job Summary

This position is located in the Animal Welfare Division of the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of the Animal Welfare Superintendent. The Veterinarian is responsible for supervising, coordinating, and monitoring the veterinary medicine program and related functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the health and care of animals in the facility
  • Coordinate professional and technical veterinary staff functions, training, and work activities
  • Provide preventative, diagnostic, and medical treatment and surgeries for impounded, quarantined, foster, sick, and/or injured domestic, exotic, or wild animals and livestock
  • Perform emergency care and surgeries
  • Assist with animal cruelty situations, including performing cruelty examinations and traveling to testify in court
  • Administer the ongoing animal health care and spay/neuter programs
  • Assist with the development of animal care protocols
  • Oversee euthanasia protocols and practices
  • Serve as consultant for animal welfare staff
  • Provide direct supervision to laboratory personnel engaged in animal treatment work activities and other staff as assigned
Requirements
  • Knowledge of veterinary medicine
  • Knowledge of domestic, exotic, or wild animals, and livestock
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply management techniques and principles to work performed
  • Knowledge of animal shelter medicine and facility management
  • Skill in supervising and coordinating activities of assigned staff
  • Skill in applying knowledge of veterinary medicine to work performed
  • Skill in analyzing data
  • Skill in verbal and written communication
  • Ability and willingness to make work-related decisions and assume responsibility for decisions made
  • Ability to conduct animal research related to public health
  • Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma State Veterinarian License
  • Possession of a valid driver's license (operator)
  • Eligible to hold a Controlled Drug License

Working Conditions

Primarily indoors, subject to sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time. Subject to moderate local travel. Subject to continual contact with animals that may be hostile, injured, and/or diseased. Subject to responding to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis. Willingness to perform multiple surgeries on a daily basis. Occasionally required to work beyond normal work hours. May require a varied work schedule to include weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements
  • Speech and hearing enough to communicate in person and by telephone
  • Hearing enough to effectively utilize equipment such as a stethoscope
  • Finger dexterity and feeling enough to perform physical examinations
  • Near vision enough to perform physical examinations
  • Visual acuity, color discrimination, and depth perception enough to perform and evaluate various laboratory tests
