The Cost Estimator plays a crucial role in evaluating bid proposals, dissecting designs into distinct elements, and precisely calculating the necessary steps involved in the preparation, demolition, construction, and installation of underground projects, including both wet and dry utilities, as well as shotcrete applications. Utilizing the company's estimating methodologies and software tools, the Estimator determines project expenses and formulates a recommended bid price. This position collaborates closely with the executive team on selected proposals, providing regular updates as needed, preparing and submitting bids, and diligently following up with clients to enhance the likelihood of securing projects. Additionally, the Estimator is responsible for preparing comprehensive Job Books and Field Books that outline methods and materials transitioning into Job status, and leading handoff meetings to ensure a smooth transfer of project information to field supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Interprets and comprehends specifications, drawings, and notes included in bid requests, and conducts site visits as necessary.
- Engages with potential clients to clarify any issues that may arise.
- Collects pricing data from suppliers and subcontractors when required for bid inclusion.
- Breaks down each project into its individual components for construction.
- Applies the company's estimating techniques and rates within the estimating software to accurately assess job costs.
- Reviews the final estimate and bid package with the executive team prior to submission deadlines.
- Effectively manages workload to ensure timely bid submissions.
- Proactively follows up with clients regarding bids and provides necessary post-bid information.
- Conducts follow-ups with clients on unsuccessful bids to understand feedback and reviews insights with the executive team.
- Facilitates handoff meetings with project managers and foremen to transfer all pertinent project details, including drawings, submittals, job instructions, materials lists, project schedules, budget information, and customer data.
- Offers ongoing support as needed to ensure successful project completion.
- Prepares weekly reports on bid schedules and project dashboards.
- Possesses proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, MS Project, and estimating software.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or professional certification.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in construction planning, estimating, takeoffs, and cost analysis.
- Expertise in excavation, underground utility work, and concrete construction.
