SUMMARY

Evaluates, monitors, and manages the overall Health and Development status of students, ensuring their optimal physical well-being in collaboration with Special Education personnel, educational staff, families, and community health organizations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are essential to this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

  • Conducts comprehensive physical evaluations, gathers medical histories, and maintains thorough health records for students with special needs.
  • Offers insights and recommendations concerning the IEP process in relation to health services.
  • Facilitates health counseling sessions for students and their families, initiating referrals to relevant health specialists and agencies when necessary.
  • Designs and implements training workshops for paraprofessionals on complex procedures (such as diapering, feeding, tracheostomy care, and gastrostomy feeding).
  • Certifies paraprofessionals who successfully complete training on non-complex procedures.
  • Delivers health education to classroom educators, parents, and community organizations.
  • Adheres to the regulations and guidelines set forth by local and state health agencies and the school board to manage communicable disease controls.
  • Assists in conducting periodic assessments of school facilities to evaluate environmental health as it pertains to students with special needs.
  • Conducts home visits when required.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Must possess a current license as a registered professional nurse in the State of Louisiana and hold a valid certificate as a school nurse in the State of Louisiana. A minimum of two years of experience as a registered professional nurse is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical literature and legal documents. Capable of responding to common inquiries or complaints from staff and regulatory bodies. Proficient in composing communications that adhere to prescribed styles and formats. Ability to effectively present information to middle management.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; to work tactfully and harmoniously with staff, students, agencies, parents, and the public; to maintain confidentiality of records, reports, and conversations; to earn the respect and trust of students; and to effectively plan, organize, and execute assignments with minimal supervision.

Requires physical stamina and emotional resilience to perform effectively under pressure while managing all aspects of the role.
