Metal Fabrication Specialist

Position Summary: Under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor, engage in welding and fabrication tasks essential for the upkeep and repair of various vehicles, equipment, structures, and irrigation systems within the district.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct repairs and fabricate metal components using metalworking tools, including layout and design tasks;
• Create sheet metal products such as gates, covers, and vents; repair and fabricate grates, structures, and railings;
• Reinforce and hard face worn areas on construction equipment buckets and blades;
• Address cracks and structural defects on equipment and throughout the district;
• Develop specialty items and tools as needed;
• Fabricate items based on drawings, blueprints, and sketches; perform welding and fabrication repairs in various field locations.
• Assist with the excavation, installation, and repair of concrete mains, lines, and laterals; perform weed abatement to maintain clear drains, channels, and ditches.
• Follow instructions while aiding district crews in concrete and pavement maintenance and repair; assist with backfilling open trenches and may contribute to finishing work as required; help in the removal and relocation of construction materials at job sites.
• Remove paint and other coatings, and maintain cleanliness and upkeep of district facilities.
• Under supervision, may assist in setting up traffic control measures, including signs and barricades.
• Adhere to safety protocols at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficient in various welding techniques, including electric, oxy-acetylene, and MIG/TIG;
• Skilled in performing code-compliant welding and cutting of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals;
• Familiar with standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the trade, including safety precautions and metal forming techniques;
• Ability to operate equipment such as iron workers, band saws, and pipe benders safely;
• Basic understanding of automotive mechanics;
• Capability to operate heavy machinery;
• Adept at visualizing special projects and determining appropriate work methods, designs, and evaluations;
• Ability to identify various types and grades of metal and select suitable repair and fabrication methods;
• Competent in working independently and collaboratively with team members;
• Skilled in maintaining accurate records of materials, work hours, and other necessary information;
• Capable of working safely in confined spaces and from elevated platforms;
• Experienced in facility fabrication and repairs, including steel structures and automated gates;
• Ability to instruct others in welding techniques and equipment usage.

Minimum Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent;
• Valid CDL with Tanker endorsement, Class A;
• Availability to work weekends and holidays;
• Physical capability to lift 50-75 pounds, with extended periods of bending, stooping, and occasional twisting;
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
