Job Title: Staff Attorney

Job Summary:

The Staff Attorney will provide civil legal assistance to indigent persons in accordance with program policies and priorities. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to social justice and a passion for serving vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interview and certify eligibility of clients, identifying their legal problems and providing appropriate legal assistance.
  • Participate in community outreach and education, promoting the mission and services of Florida Rural Legal Services.
  • Represent clients in court and before administrative agencies, advocating for their rights and interests.
  • Provide documentation and statistical information as required, maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Participate in case acceptance meetings, collaborating with colleagues to ensure effective case management.
  • Engage in ongoing training and professional development, staying up-to-date on relevant laws and procedures.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic, excellent time management skills, and a commitment to treating clients and staff with respect and courtesy.
  • Serve as a role model, promoting the values of hard work, high-quality advocacy, and respect for others.
  • Ensure accessibility of the local office, serving clients with diverse needs and backgrounds.
  • Promote good relations with the public, including client groups, service providers, and private bars.
  • Familiarize yourself with FRLS policies, LSC requirements, and other relevant regulations, adhering to those policies and requirements.
  • Maintain an accurate follow-up system, reviewing cases as needed to ensure effective case management.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Barred in Florida.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal court practices.
  • Some knowledge of the legal system, commitment to social justice, and compassion for clients.
  • Ability to forge positive relationships with prospects and colleagues.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently maximize existing resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Bilingual Spanish/Haitian Creole preferred, but not required.

Work Environment:

This is a largely sedentary role, with some lifting of office supplies up to 20 pounds. Must be able to travel throughout Florida as needed.
