Nursing Supervisor

Job Summary:
The Nursing Supervisor is a critical role within our healthcare team, responsible for ensuring the delivery of efficient and effective nursing care while achieving positive clinical outcomes and patient/family satisfaction. This position serves as a clinical operational liaison between the units and the Center Nurse Executive, ADON, and Unit Managers, and is responsible for the clinical operations of the Nursing Units, including ensuring compliance with Genesis policies and procedures, practice standards, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Administrative: 1.1 Collaborate with the Center Nurse Executive to maintain adequate nursing coverage for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; 1.2 Effectively utilize existing client resources to minimize overtime and agency personnel; 1.3 Participate in staff recruitment, including interviewing and selecting nursing personnel; 1.4 Assess the work performance of nursing staff and provide feedback and coaching as needed; 1.5 Recommend and facilitate employee promotions, transfers, and terminations; 1.6 Collaborate with other departments to provide timely and effective care consistent with individual needs, choices, and preferences; 1.7 Answer emergencies throughout the shift, including starting IVs and pronouncing death; 1.8 Foster a strong partnership between the medical staff and the department of nursing; 1.9 Make recommendations to the Center Nurse Executive regarding nursing care equipment and supplies; 1.10 Promote a culture of safety to ensure a healthy practice and living environment; 1.11 Participate in meetings to address patient care, survey, and standards of care issues as requested; 1.12 Ensure the building is secure during the assigned shift by checking doors and alarms according to nursing center protocols;
2. Clinical Leadership: 2.1 Work with the CNE to plan, organize, direct, and implement a comprehensive center-wide nursing program; 2.2 Provide nursing leadership to meet the goals of the Genesis organization and the individual center; 2.3 Ensure patient care assignments are consistent with staff competencies, scope of practice, and patient needs; 2.4 Create an environment that is respectful, team-oriented, and responsive to the concerns of staff, patients, and families; 2.5 Complete rounds on the units to observe patients and determine if nursing needs are being met; 2.6 Provide patient care when required; 2.7 Monitor nursing care to ensure positive clinical outcomes and minimize rehospitalizations; 2.8 Ensure Point Click Care (PCC) is utilized according to business processes; 2.9 Encourage communication between licensed nursing staff and CNAs during and between shifts; 2.10 Encourage shift-to-shift communication between incoming and outgoing nursing staff; 2.11 Ensure timely and accurate compliance of the MDS process and that it reflects the patient's plan of care; 2.12 Review prospective admissions in relation to existing nursing capabilities and ensure readiness to treat; 2.13 Contact attending physicians to obtain orders as indicated; 2.14 Ensure that physician orders are followed as prescribed; 2.15 Oversee medication management to ensure adequate supplies and that all medications are handled in accordance with Genesis policy; 2.16 Ensure that patients' attending physicians and families or responsible parties are promptly notified of any significant change in the patient's health condition; 2.17 Facilitate discharge planning process and provide consultation as needed; 2.18 Investigate patient/family complaints and take appropriate actions to bring to resolution;
3. Education: 3.1 Identify educational needs of staff and communicate needs to the Nurse Practice Educator (NPE); 3.2 Participate in the evaluation of staff competency; 3.3 Assist with the orientation of newly hired nursing staff; 3.4 Demonstrate, teach, and evaluate nursing skills utilized in direct patient care of the unit's specific patient population; 3.5 Promote professional development and career opportunities for nursing staff;
4. Quality Improvement: 4.1 Support the CNE in employing a strong Quality Improvement (QI) process for the nursing department; 4.2 Ensure that patients' Care Plans are implemented and periodically reviewed and modified as necessary; 4.3 Ensure that patients' accident/incident, adverse event, and grievances/concerns are fully documented, investigated, reported, and addressed in accordance with Genesis policies and procedures and Federal/State rules and regulations;
Requirements:
Maintains confidentiality and protects sensitive Protected Health Information (PHI) at all times;
Stays and works beyond scheduled shift if needed to meet state staffing requirements and/or needs of patients;
Performs other duties as requested.
Compliance:
Complies with and promotes adherence to applicable legal requirements, standards, policies, and procedures, including those within the Compliance and Ethics Program, Standard/Code of Conduct, Federal False Claims Act, and HIPAA. Provides leadership and support for the Compliance and Ethics Program within management area. Ensures timely and accurate reporting and responses to compliance-related issues and monitors the implementation of corrective action plans related to such issues. Ensures that staff participates in orientation and training programs, including compliance courses and relevant policies and procedures, and that such training is properly documented. Participates in compliance and other required training programs. Provides open lines of communication regarding compliance issues within management area and access to the Integrity Line and ensures that retaliation against staff who report suspected incidences of non-compliance does not occur. Promptly reports concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance to supervisor, Compliance Liaison, or to the Compliance Officer via the Integrity Hotline. Participates in monitoring and auditing activities and investigations, and implementing quality assurance and performance improvement processes, as required.
