San Francisco, California, United States Square Inc. Full time
Principal Engineer - Mobile Solutions, Square Inc.
  • Full-time

Square Inc. is dedicated to fostering economic empowerment through innovative technology. Our foundational teams — including People, Finance, Legal, Hardware, Information Security, and Platform Infrastructure Engineering — collaborate across various business sectors globally, developing inclusive policies and strategies that drive growth and support our mission.

The Proto organization within Square is focused on accelerating the transition to a more open economy by creating products that enhance access and independence. Our current initiatives include projects in the Bitcoin sector, such as a self-custody Bitcoin wallet, Bitkey. We believe that the need for tools promoting independence extends beyond financial services, and we embrace open development principles to foster transparency and collaboration.

We are expanding our dynamic engineering team and are in search of a mobile engineer with a strong background in architecting Kotlin Multiplatform solutions or extensive experience in Kotlin-based Android development. Our approach integrates both Android and iOS platforms, aiming for a unified solution that meets diverse user needs. We seek a candidate who can help shape our multiplatform strategy in a scalable, sustainable, and secure manner.

This position will involve significant feature development for the Bitkey self-custody wallet, collaborating with our team of mobile and backend engineers. The most effective way to influence our architecture is through hands-on development.

Key Responsibilities:

- Deliver essential features for a non-custodial, hardware-enabled Bitcoin wallet for a global user base.

- Collaborate with and guide a skilled team of mobile engineers to enhance our multi-platform mobile architecture, improve testing capabilities, and refine our mobile CI infrastructure.

- Optimize our mobile release pipeline by increasing automation and ensuring reliability.

- Partner closely with designers and product managers to create user experiences that expand Bitkey's offerings.

- Work within a small team of engineers across our Mobile Application (KMP, Kotlin, Swift) and Rust backend, responsible for features from concept through long-term maintenance.

Qualifications:

- Over 12 years of engineering experience with a strong emphasis on mobile development.

- Proven experience in architecting Android mobile applications, with interest or experience in Kotlin Multiplatform.

- Skilled in designing and building APIs that connect mobile applications with backend services.

- Familiarity with build tools such as Gradle.

- Experience in developing or enhancing mobile CI infrastructure.

- Proven ability to work within small, cross-functional teams. Experience with 0-to-1 feature development is a plus.

- Passion for the challenges and opportunities associated with building a global-first product from the ground up.

- Interest in Bitcoin and promoting financial accessibility for all.
