Job Summary

The Tax Senior Manager is a key leadership role within the Tax department at Miller Kaplan. This position is responsible for supporting and leading the Tax team, attracting new business to the firm, and ensuring that tax filings and related matters are prepared and processed in accordance with state regulations and local procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a coach and mentor to all employees in the Tax department, providing guidance and support to help them grow and develop in their roles.
  • Handle onboarding, training, discipline, and termination of employees in accordance with company policy, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations, helping employees to identify areas for improvement and develop their skills.
  • Provide oversight and direction to employees in the Tax department, ensuring that they have the resources and support they need to succeed.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with staff training for new hires and ongoing staff training, ensuring that employees have the skills and knowledge they need to perform their roles effectively.
  • Conduct business development efforts, including meeting with prospective clients, preparing fee quotes and proposals, and evaluating client needs.
  • Conduct complex tax research and stay up-to-date with the latest tax laws, possessing a sound knowledge of tax regulations and procedures.
  • Communicate directly with existing clients, colleagues, management, and federal and state taxing authorities regarding various tax matters.
  • Delegate projects to Associates and Senior Associates and provide accounting and tax assistance as needed.
  • Recognize, anticipate, and resolve tax issues, making recommendations to Partners as necessary.
  • Respond to IRS and state agency audits, inquiries, and tax notices, ensuring that the firm is in compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Review complex gift tax and estate tax returns, ensuring that they are accurate and complete.
  • Review complex U.S. and multi-state income tax returns for individuals and business entities, C-corporations, S-corporations, Partnerships, Fiduciary, and Non-Profit Organizations.
  • Take direction and report to the Partners of the Tax department, ensuring that the firm's goals and objectives are met.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field.
  • CPA or Bar certification.
  • Eight+ years of public accounting experience with a tax focus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field.
  • Significant supervisory experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Competence with tax compliance and research software, including GoSystems or other software.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of the organization, both internally and externally.
  • Detail-oriented and able to multi-task, possessing excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Display sound business and professional judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of self-motivation and self-investment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Works well under pressure and client deadlines.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
