Role Overview:

The Clinical Nutrition Specialist employs the nutrition care process to evaluate, diagnose, provide nutritional interventions, and monitor the dietary status and progress of patients. This role adheres to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance for registered dietitians. The specialist actively engages in exceptional customer service and maintains respectful relationships with all stakeholders.

Value Added to the Team:

  • Assessment: Conducts nutrition-focused physical assessments, gathers measurements, reviews medical histories, collects data through interviews, utilizes validated assessment tools, evaluates anthropometric data, and calculates estimated comparative standards.
  • Diagnosis: Analyzes assessment data to identify nutrition-related risks, issues, criteria consistent with malnutrition, knowledge gaps, and/or high-risk health behaviors.
  • Intervention: Provides nutrition recommendations, orders, education, counseling, and/or referrals to additional services.
  • Education and Counseling: Delivers counseling and education that aligns with appropriate health literacy and cultural sensitivity for patients with conditions requiring nutritional management. Applies evidence-based theories and concepts, including the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing.
  • Monitoring: Facilitates follow-up to track progress. Adjusts nutrition care plans to achieve dietary goals and promote optimal health outcomes.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field.
  • Active registered dietitian status with the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Current active licensure in the state of practice.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in nutrition or a related field.
