Job Title: Direct Support Professional

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Direct Support Professional to join our team at Developmental Services, Inc. - Washington. As a Direct Support Professional, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with disabilities to live fulfilling lives.

Job Summary

The primary goal of this position is to provide support and assistance to individuals with disabilities, enabling them to build strong social skills, encourage independence, and create an environment that allows them to thrive.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide active direct care for designated clients, developing an individualized approach to client care by providing instruction in communication skills, daily living skills, socialization skills, fine and gross motor skills, perceptual skills, and any other areas based on programming and client needs.
  2. Remain actively engaged with all clients, providing support for medical and/or behavioral needs that may require direct care.
  3. Document major activities and supports provided for clients in daily notes, completing all documentation in a professional, accurate, and timely manner according to agency standards.
  4. Input documentation into Accel of clients' programming, including behavior, seizures, accidents/incidents, and progress on objectives on a daily basis.
  5. Use personal cell phone or company device as needed for DSP time entry.
  6. Responsibly pass or monitor medication administration based on client needs.
  7. Drive/take clients to appointments, work, and other daily living activities.
  8. Provide a safe environment for all clients, planning and participating in special community-based activities.
  9. Display patience in all situations involving clients, speaking in an even and positive tone of voice when conversing with clients.
  10. Appropriately respond to clients' behavior via verbal and/or physical intervention based on client needs.
  11. Provide services in compliance with all funding sources and governing bodies, maintaining confidentiality by adhering to HIPAA guidelines and agency policies.
  12. Follow policies/procedures set forth by the agency in specific departments.
  13. Create a positive environment for clients, parents, guardians, and participating staff and Direct Care Professionals.
  14. Assist with physical needs of clients, including feeding, hygiene, and toileting, and provide first aid and physical assistance as needed.
  15. Use medical adaptive equipment, including wheelchairs, Hoyer lifts, shower chairs, blood sugar testing equipment, CPAP, oxygen, and BP monitors.
  16. Monitor physical condition of clients' homes, ensuring a safe and sound direct care environment.
  17. Be punctual and have consistent attendance, working irregular shifts outside standard agency operating hours, including weekends and holidays, as necessary to meet client needs.
  18. Maintain professional communication with fellow direct care providers, clients, family members, and other stakeholders.
  19. Remain awake and available to support clients at all times during scheduled hours.
  20. Attend meetings and trainings as authorized for a DSP.
  21. Display a team-oriented, cooperative attitude while maintaining a positive working relationship with fellow Direct Support Professionals, supervisory staff, and clients.
Job Environment
  • Occasional high noise levels may require the use of hearing protection.
  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids, pests, contagious pathogens, and/or bed bugs.
  • Must be able to climb stairs on an occasional basis to access work areas.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, oils, paints, and other industrial odors.
Qualifications
  1. Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  2. High School diploma or GED preferred.
  3. Previous experience working with clients with intellectual disabilities or as a DSP is preferred.
  4. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong teamwork skills.
  5. Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining annual certification in CPR, First Aid, CPI, and Med Core A & B.
  6. Proficient in word processing and computer operation.
  7. Possess and maintain a clear criminal record per Medicaid Waiver regulation requirements.
  8. Maintain a valid Indiana driver's license, insurance on personal vehicle (minimum of PLPD with Medical liability coverage), and maintain insurability as defined by the agency liability insurance carrier.
  9. Possess and maintain reliable transportation that meets state requirements for transporting clients.
  10. Must have the ability to successfully work in both independent and group settings and communicate during a crisis situation.
