Position: Mechanical Equipment Specialist
The Mechanical Equipment Specialist is responsible for defining, designing, troubleshooting, and identifying opportunities for ongoing enhancement and innovation of proprietary machinery utilized in the operation of Direct Reduced Iron production facilities and new technological ventures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position may involve leading a team of equipment engineers, providing technical guidance for various projects and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct mechanical analyses and designs through fundamental calculations relevant to Mechanical Engineering.
- Create conceptual designs and collaborate with designers to develop mechanical schematics.
- Oversee the mechanical equipment design process by supporting or acting as the Lead Equipment Engineer for projects, which includes:
- Guiding the efforts of assigned engineers and designers in equipment layout and design, reviewing mechanical drawings, calculations, and sketches, developing specifications and requisitions for procurement, evaluating vendor proposals, and coordinating tasks with external engineering consultants and clients.
- Provide technical assistance to Aftermarket, Inspections, and Purchasing departments by reviewing proposals, vendor submissions, and conducting on-site inspections of mechanical equipment.
- Evaluate internal designs and vendor-supplied equipment for compliance with engineering specifications, codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Review drawings and drafts to ensure adherence to design specifications.
- Utilize Innovation Engineering principles to create new and improved designs, promoting continuous improvement and innovation.
- Collaborate with other Engineers and Management to suggest enhancements to existing or proposed designs based on functionality.
- Travel as necessary for business trips and field assignments to fulfill departmental, project, and corporate responsibilities.
- Draft Requisitions, Specifications, Quality Documents, Operation and Maintenance Manuals, and other technical documentation as needed.
- Work collaboratively with all company departments and personnel on assignments, striving to build consensus by identifying solutions that serve the best interests of all stakeholders.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Essential:
- Proficient in advanced computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
- Basic knowledge of Autodesk products or similar software.
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, processes, and sound engineering practices.
- Ability to apply mechanical engineering concepts for complex problem resolution.
- Understanding of materials and their selection for mechanical equipment design.
- Exceptional technical writing and interpersonal communication skills.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks while adhering to schedules and deadlines.
- Coordinate design timelines with designers, engineers, and other departments.
- Experience in industrial plant environments.
- Willingness to travel internationally and stay for extended periods at project sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with computer-aided simulation and analysis of Mechanical Equipment designs (e.g., Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics).
- Knowledge of design and inspection of welded joints for mechanical equipment, including Non-Destructive Examination training or certification.
- Familiarity with ASME Codes and Standards, particularly ASME Section VIII and IX.
- Advanced understanding of fabrication, welding, and manufacturing techniques.
- Experience with industrial scrubber and cooler systems specification and design.
- Expertise in piping and ductwork design and stress analysis, including hangers, supports, and thermal expansion considerations.
- Provide technical advisory services for field erection, commissioning, and plant shutdown operations.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related Mechanical/Materials Engineering discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial or technical setting, preferably within the steel industry.
Travel Requirements:
- 10% - 30% travel, both internationally and domestically, depending on project demands, with potential for increased travel during specific project phases.
