Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Medical Coding Specialist I to join our team. As a key member of our Health Information Management department, you will be responsible for accurately coding and abstracting inpatient medical records. Your attention to detail and analytical skills will ensure that our patients receive the highest level of reimbursement for their care.

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately code and abstract inpatient medical records, ensuring 95% accuracy as determined by audits
  • Analyze diagnoses and procedures to determine the optimal DRG or APR-DRG assignment, achieving 95% accuracy through monthly audits
  • Abstract and enter coded information into EPIC for timely billing, verifying discharge disposition through CRM notes in PennChart
  • Maintain a consistent level of performance, striving to meet productivity guidelines: 7.5-11.5 inpatient records per day at HUP, PPMC, and PAH
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related field (preferred)
  • Up to 1 year of experience or training in coding inpatient medical records (required)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification (required)
  • RHIA or RHIT certification (preferred)
