Position Overview
The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays a crucial role in safeguarding the environment and public health for all residents by ensuring the delivery of over 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, while effectively managing wastewater and stormwater systems. As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP employs nearly 6,000 dedicated professionals.
Department Responsibilities
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) oversees the operation and upkeep of all sewage treatment facilities across the five boroughs. This encompasses 14 wastewater treatment plants, sludge dewatering sites, collection facilities (including pumping stations and combined sewer overflow retention facilities), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels.
Role Description
Under general supervision, the selected individual will function as a Port Engineer within the Marine Section. The primary responsibility of the Port Engineer is to support the senior Port Engineer in the upkeep and repair of a fleet of marine vessels. This role involves coordinating, scheduling, and assisting with both dockside and shipyard repairs and maintenance for all DEP marine vessels. Additionally, the Port Engineer will assist in managing a Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Qualifications Required
1. A Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture from an accredited institution, along with five years of full-time paid experience in marine engineering operations, maintenance, design, and repair. This includes drafting contracts and maintenance specifications for marine vessel upkeep, as well as managing significant marine projects, including dry dockings; or closely related experience; or
2. Seagoing experience as a Chief Engineer or 1st Assistant Engineer with a United States Coast Guard Engineering License for Steam or Motor Vessels of any horsepower may substitute for up to three years of the experience described in point 1 above. However, all candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline or Naval Architecture.
