Position Summary

The Regulatory Labeling & Compliance Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing regulatory labeling and compliance initiatives. This position is responsible for developing and implementing company policies related to food labeling compliance and serves as a subject matter expert on FDA Labeling Laws, 21 CFR Regulations, Canadian food regulations (SFCA and SFCR), allergen labeling, ingredient substitutions, non-GMO claims, food additives, flavors, and regulatory labeling processes. The manager will stay informed about regulatory and state law changes that may affect product labeling and provide practical, risk-based recommendations to cross-functional teams to mitigate regulatory risks.

As new products are developed or existing products are modified, this role will oversee the creation and updating of labels in accordance with US and Canadian regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead labeling initiatives within the Regulatory Labeling Team, proactively suggesting label language, including nutritional fact panels, ingredient lists, and allergen statements.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of labeling changes and associated documentation within Optiva. Collaborate with R&D and FSQA teams to ensure accurate internal documentation and data entry into Optiva. Identify and rectify errors in ingredient subcomponents in partnership with R&D and FSQA Supplier Qualification.
  • Provide regulatory guidance to cross-functional teams regarding current and emerging regulations, including labeling, food additives, flavors, FDA, USDA, SFCA, SFCR, allergens, non-GMO statements, Kosher certifications, organic claims, ingredient substitutions, and nutrition facts.
  • Utilize internal and external resources to assess ingredients and formulations, making informed, risk-based labeling recommendations. Validate the output of NFP and ILS against artwork in Slingshot, with potential manual adjustments required.
  • Collaborate with Food Safety & Quality Assurance, R&D, Marketing, and legal teams to monitor emerging regulatory trends that may impact product offerings and business growth.
  • Identify opportunities for process enhancement related to labeling, regulatory assessments, and compliance with claims.
  • Mentor and guide direct reports, fostering their professional development and growth.

Collaboration with Teams and Stakeholders

  • FSQA Supply Chain: Utilize TraceGains for supplier ingredient information integration into Optiva.
  • R&D: Manage Optiva Data for ingredient information, formulations, and reporting.
  • Innovation Group: Oversee the graphics review and approval process using Slingshot.
  • FSQA Bakery Management: Engage in review processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science or a closely related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of FDA Labeling Requirements, 21 CFR, and Safe Foods for Canada Act (SFCA and SFCR) is essential.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Regulatory Label Development and/or Regulatory Compliance.
  • Prior experience in direct management is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in handling projects with tight deadlines and effectively prioritizing tasks.
