Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Sergeant/Duty Command, the Certified Patrol Officer is tasked with safeguarding SCPA facilities. This role involves protecting individuals and property, maintaining public order, and preventing incidents such as theft, vandalism, and other unlawful activities. Officers must be well-versed in the security protocols outlined in the Facility Security Plan (FSP) and uphold the laws of South Carolina.

Key Responsibilities

Security Duties

  • Possess knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in security measures as per 33 CFR regulations.
  • Conduct regular patrols of facilities in compliance with the approved FSP, ensuring all patrols are documented and any concerns are reported to the Duty Supervisor.
  • Assist in managing access control at entry points according to the FSP.
  • Facilitate traffic control to ensure smooth operations.

Enforcement Duties

  • Uphold the laws of South Carolina and enforce security measures as per the approved FSP.
  • Perform screenings as mandated by the FSP to identify and deter hazardous materials.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to facilities.
  • Enforce Transportation Worker Identification Card standards.
  • Implement parking regulations and issue citations when necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Conduct maintenance and inspections of assigned equipment, including vehicles and weapons, ensuring compliance with 33 CFR.
  • Fulfill any assigned duties at various posts as directed.
  • Participate in departmental training sessions.
  • Assist with the docking and departure of vessels, completing necessary documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) and maintaining good standing.
  • A valid South Carolina driver's license is required for operating Ports Authority vehicles.

Skills and Attributes

  • Basic computer proficiency is essential.
  • Professional appearance and effective communication skills are preferred.
  • Must maintain a clean driving record and have no felony convictions.
Physical Requirements
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy objects and engaging in defensive tactics.
  • Must meet specific physical fitness standards, including running, push-ups, sit-ups, and dragging weight over a distance.
